Greg McKeown is the author of the New York Times and Wall Street Journal bestseller "Essentialism: The Disciplined Pursuit of Less." He is among the most popular bloggers for the Harvard Business Review. He speaks about innovation, focus, leadership, discipline, simplicity, execution, and of course, the power of living and leading as an Essentialist.
Doing the right things shouldn't be the only concern when going about your most serious responsibilities in life, just as much as hard work and over-exertion shouldn't be your sole approach when it comes to competition and being successful.
Tyler and Greg discuss the core of essentialism, why people get pulled into non-essentialism, and why burnout is not a badge of honor. He also explains the proper perspective that helps success become more attainable in the most significant bits of your life –effortlessly. To be selective, thoughtful, and be doing less but better the quickest –is always the point for Greg.
It Can Only Go So Far
As Greg references the famous rocks, pebbles, and sand metaphor, he tells how the example isn't always the case for everyone in real life. Despite this imagery being so popularly received and applied, he believes the metaphor can only go so far. Prioritizing your big rocks into a jar, following up with your pebbles, then lastly filling in your sand shows how a hectic life of roles and responsibilities can be tackled by an analogy. But what if your big rocks are just simply too many? What if, in themselves, your main responsibilities are just too much for the jar? The question Greg raises brings light to the reality; in life, doing the right things isn't always enough.
When they get overwhelming, abandoning some of our primary roles isn't the point for Greg. Sometimes, asking the brain, "what's the most effortless way to handle this?" is the game-changer that you're yet to tap into. Greg goes on to describe this as "the closest thing to magic" for him. By asking this simple question, with practice, the brain is undoubtedly wired into eventually believing that working hard isn't the only easy way to achieve wanted results.
For high-performing real estate investors looking to achieve more, working harder isn’t the answer! Tune in and elevate your productivity.
